Confessional Statement for Sovereign Care Counseling
Sovereign Care Counseling exists to provide Christ-centered, church-rooted, and Scripture-saturated care for the souls of men and women. Our convictions regarding counseling flow from our theological commitments, particularly as expressed in the Second London Baptist Confession of Faith (1689).
The Sufficiency and Authority of Scripture
We believe that the Holy Scriptures are the inspired, inerrant, and sufficient Word of God, given for everything necessary for life and godliness (2 Tim. 3:16–17; 2 Pet. 1:3).
Therefore, Scripture is:
-
Our final authority in diagnosing the human condition
-
Our primary means for guiding personal change
-
Our sufficient resource for faithful soul care
We do not look to Scripture as merely helpful, but as authoritative and comprehensive in all matters of the soul.
The Proper Role of General Revelation
We affirm that God reveals Himself in creation and providence (Rom. 1:19–21; Ps. 19:1–6). Observations about human behavior and experience may yield real insights.
However:
-
Because of sin, all human interpretation is distorted apart from Scripture
-
Extra-biblical insights must remain subordinate to and evaluated by God’s Word
We therefore receive what is true, reject what is false, and reinterpret all things through a biblical worldview.
A Biblical Understanding of the Human Person
We believe that man is created in the image of God (Gen. 1:26–27), designed to know, love, and worship Him.
At the same time, all people are fallen in Adam:
-
Sin has corrupted the mind, affections, and will
-
The fundamental problem of humanity is not merely suffering, but sin (Rom. 3:23)
Therefore, the central focus of counseling is the heart—the control center of thoughts, desires, and worship (Prov. 4:23).
The Gospel as the Only True Hope
We believe that true and lasting change is only possible through the person and work of Jesus Christ.
Through union with Christ:
-
The believer is forgiven and justified
-
The believer is empowered for transformation
-
The believer is progressively conformed into Christ’s image (Rom. 8:29)
All counseling must therefore be explicitly gospel-centered, not merely moralistic or behavior-driven.
The Nature of Change (Sanctification)
We believe that transformation occurs through the ordinary means of grace:
-
The Word and sacraments of God
-
The Spirit of God
-
The people of God
Biblical counseling seeks to:
-
Address both suffering and sin
-
Cultivate repentance and faith
-
Foster progressive Christlikeness
The Role of the Local Church
We believe that counseling is fundamentally a ministry of the church, not a replacement for it.
The local church is:
-
The primary context for discipleship and care
-
The community where believers bear one another’s burdens (Gal. 6:2)
-
The environment where lasting transformation is supported and sustained
Sovereign Care Counseling exists to serve and strengthen—not supplant—the ministry of the local church.
The Goal of Counseling
Our ultimate aim is not merely relief from life’s difficulties, but:
The glory of God through restored worship and Christlike living in every area of life.
We seek to help individuals:
-
Grow in holiness
-
Respond faithfully in suffering
-
Walk in obedience and hope
-
Reflect the character of Christ
Summary Statement
Sovereign Care Counseling is committed to a Reformed, Scripture-sufficient, church-centered model of soul care, where theology shapes method, Christ defines hope, and transformation is measured by conformity to Him.
